The RSC (Research Service Core) Instrumentation Development is responsible for maintaining, operating, and continuously improving a full range of laboratory instruments and processes.
As a senior UI/UX designer, I collaborated closely with the product team to enhance the user experience and interface design for the NCATS Research Services Core (RSC) Laboratory Instrument Management system. My primary responsibilities included developing user-centric workflows, designing intuitive interfaces, and ensuring seamless interactions to improve the efficiency of laboratory instrument management processes.
The visual style for the NCATS RSC system was crafted to reflect a professional and functional aesthetic, suitable for a laboratory environment. We employed a clean design with a neutral color palette to minimize distractions, allowing users to focus on critical tasks. Consistent typography and straightforward iconography were utilized to enhance readability and facilitate quick comprehension of information.

To validate our design approach, we developed high-fidelity prototypes that simulated real-world interactions within the NCATS RSC system. These prototypes enabled stakeholders to experience the application’s functionality firsthand, providing valuable insights into user flows and interface responsiveness. Interactive elements were meticulously designed to mirror actual system behavior, ensuring that the prototypes served as effective tools for usability testing and iterative refinement.

The redesigned NCATS RSC Laboratory Instrument Management system successfully streamlined laboratory operations by offering an intuitive and efficient user interface. The enhancements led to improved user satisfaction, reduced training time for new users, and increased overall productivity within the research services core. Positive feedback from both users and stakeholders highlighted the system’s effectiveness in meeting the complex demands of laboratory instrument management.
